Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2025
How to prepare for it… a few thoughts…
At the end of October (October 29 to November 2), a new edition of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show will take place. It is the largest boat show in the world.
Of course, I recommend that all boaters who are in buying mode go there to see many models that interest them, remembering each visit as you move on to the next stand.
You quickly remember what you like and, more importantly, what you don’t like. But beyond the interior and exterior fittings, don’t forget the mechanical aspects and onboard systems. Don’t hesitate to ask for the technical specifications of the boats you like so you can compare them once you get home.
Here is a brief overview of the items that should attract your attention beyond the aesthetic aspect.
Air conditioning, its BTU capacity, the generator and its KW capacity (in a soundproof enclosure, of course), the presence of one or more stabilization systems (Zipwake, Humphree, Gyroscope: Seakeeper or Quick), propulsion with PODS or SHAFTS with bow thruster (minimum), engine power in HP (at the propeller), and the weight of the boat when empty (preferably) say a lot about the structure of the hull.
Also, navigation electronics and components such as night vision cameras, systems such as electronic anchors (Skyhook or DPS), wireless remote controls for easy mooring, autopilot… in short, lots of features to compare…
Several articles are available on the web on almost all models.
Be sure to read the Boat Tests…
Below 45 feet, the trend is very much towards outboard motors with joysticks. Always think about the resale value in 5 years’ time, for example, and always consider market trends.
Also, do you feel comfortable in the engine room? Space is often limited, but this varies greatly.
We also look at the number of refrigerators on board; there should be plenty of them. Ideally, they should also have a good freezing capacity, but this is very rare.
A freezer is very practical for long stays on board, but be sure to check the capacity of the black water tank (toilet). Sometimes you will have to go (quite often) to a marina for a PUMP-OUT, especially if you are not at sea.
A tank of less than 50 US gallons is small if there are several of you on board. Think about it!!!
An example of a technical data sheet:
Another tip: remember to check the soundproofing. How? Talk through the bedrooms and bathrooms with the doors closed. Manufacturers know that boaters neglect this test.
The manufacturer’s reputation may be difficult for you to assess, but not for a professional broker. It’s important to consider resale value right away, as this is a very important factor.
The warranty mentioned is provided by the manufacturer (the dealer can claim it from the manufacturer) or only by the dealer (from the profits of the sale).
Is the motorization adequate for the weight of the boat?
Ideally, you should compare technical data and configurations (layout) to visualize the available space…
Of course, buying a boat is not based solely on technical criteria; you also have to fall in love with a model or have a sudden attraction to it. After all, it’s a gift you’re giving yourself, but you need to find a certain balance between the technical aspects, the interior/exterior look, and love at first sight, otherwise you’ll quickly be disappointed with your purchase after a few trips on board.

A word of advice: work with an experienced broker who is free to make their own choices so that you get the best advice.
For those looking to buy primarily on the US market, don’t hesitate to seek advice. The seller’s broker will share their commission with your broker.
All brokerage contracts in the United States are signed with this fact in mind (commission sharing). Don’t think that the sale price will be reduced if you are not represented, as the seller’s broker will then keep the entire commission that was agreed upon with two brokers.
This is also the case for the Canadian market. Don’t hesitate to discuss this with your broker. All of this must be done in a climate of mutual trust, and your broker’s ethics are paramount.

Finally, there are many exhibitors offering all kinds of accessories, as well as navigation electronics. We recommend those offering night vision cameras (Flir and Sionx) and gyroscope stabilization (Seakeeper and Quick) and other systems. Fortunately, they are located under huge air-conditioned tents.
